WHO SAID THAT YOU NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE TO DO YOGA?
NOT TRUE! EVERYBODY CAN DO YOGA!
If you can breathe you can do yoga! It’s as simple as that. If any part of your body needs to be flexible to do yoga, it’s your brain and your diaphragm, not your hamstrings!
Saying you’re not flexible enough for yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a bath!
I hear that all the time: “Oh I can’t even touch my toes, so I can’t practice yoga with you”. It’s so wrong! There is a huge misconception of the entire concept of what yoga really is.
The truth is that flexibility is a consequence of practicing yoga and not a requirement.
Yoga is not about doing the splits, a handstand or any other acrobatic ability. It’s about finding your own personal balance within you. Yoga positions, which are called “asana”, are only a tool to find this inner peace and stability and to create more space. Some people will need more complicated asanas to find this balance. You just need to listen to your own unique body and know when in an asana if it is the beneficial moment for you.
Yoga is a mental practice first and a physical practice second.
Don’t let inflexibility be an excuse for not getting started with yoga practice.
Flexible or not—yoga is for all!
